This was stated by the Co-chairman of the OPPOSITION BLOC faction Yuriy Boyko during his speech at the Conciliation Board on Monday, April 16.
“Unfortunately, the announced last truce in the east has been failed. But even that short period, when there was a relative calm, showed how important it was for us to have peace and preserve the lives of people in the conflict zone. Our delegation visited Colombia. I want to remind you that a month ago, after the 52-year war, the first parliamentary elections were finally held. One of the three representatives of European countries that were officially accredited as observers to them was a representative from the OPPOSITION BLOC Roman Redko. He brought information, which, I am sure, should be used by our country for achieving progress in the peace negotiations,” Yuriy Boyko said.
He noted that the main factor that allowed Colombian President Santos to sign a peace treaty with the partisans in September 2016, which controlled the territory of half of the state at that time, was the political will of the head of state and the ability to compromise political elites. “The war was stopped by conscious decision, in which for 220 years, 220 thousand people were killed, 70 thousand of them – civilians. Therefore, I believe that our parliament should start a sessional week and finish it with the question of how to achieve peace and return territories and people. Such a step, which would confirm the parliament’s commitment to this, should be a vote for the draft law No. 7304, which is on the agenda on Thursday. The adoption of this law will provide substantial assistance to IDPs, who are today 1.5 million people. According to him, the IDPs who lost property and housing can be put on the waiting list for housing, this is very important for them,” the Co-Chairman of the OPPOSITION BLOC faction emphasized.
