This was said by the Co-Chair of the OPPOSITION BLOC Yuriy Boyko during his talk with the teachers of the Nizhnebestrivska gymnasium in Transcarpathia. The peculiarity of this institution is that it is located in a mountainous area. Children from neighboring villages lived and studied here. It was very difficult for them to get to classes every day, as well as children from low-income families. In total, 156 children study here. Previously, it was a comprehensive boarding school. From September 1, the status of the boarding school was changed to a gymnasium, respectively, and funding was reduced. Teachers lost in salary, which is so small here.
The management was told to save on everything. Teachers are on the state subventions, and the maintenance is on the district budget. According to information from the region, today, the deficit in education is UAH 4 million.
They appealed to Yuriy Boyko with their problems. The Co-Chair of the OPPOSITION BLOC noted that such institutions cannot be reorganized as thoughtlessly as the government is trying to do throughout the country.
“On the contrary, it is necessary to develop the base of such educational institutions so that children who cannot go to school every day and who have to live here feel at home. And the main problem is that teachers are paid very little salaries. In this gymnasium, the teacher receives from UAH 3 to 4 thousand. The government promised that since January 1, the teacher’s salary would be UAH 11 thousand, in the end, the teachers were simply deceived. We can also add to this the shortage of personnel, which is not enough even in metropolitan schools, and the budget, which currently lacks subsidies for education. All this in a complex is just a disaster, and this requires quick changes,” Yuriy Boyko said.
The OPPOSITION BLOC has prepared a package of proposals to the budget-2019, among which it is proposed to substantially increase spending on the development of socially-sensitive spheres of life. This is, first of all, education, the financing of which should grow not by 16%, as the government suggests, but by 26% - that is, +UAH 10 billion compared to the current year. Also, the subsistence level is proposed to be increased more than twice, that is, by the end of 2019 it should be UAH 3,800. Over the next year, the minimum wage should increase by 75% - up to 7,000 UAH. The minimum pension is proposed to be increased by 3 times – it should be UAH 4,500.
