The OPPOSITION BLOC will do everything necessary for the recently passed Law “On Education” to be abolished. In addition, in the near future an alternative law “On Education” will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada. This was stated by MP from the OPPOSITION BLOC Vadim Novinsky in the corridors of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on Wednesday, October 11.
According to Novinsky, in connection with the adoption of the “discriminatory” law “On Education”, at the PACE session in Strasbourg Ukraine is mentioned more often than all other countries.
“This law has embroiled Ukraine with many neighboring countries - with Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova. In all these countries - the attitude to this law is sharply negative. All claims are fully justified and we support them. But in European capitals for some reason officials are silent that a huge number of the Russian-speaking population is also discriminated against by this law,” Vadim Novinsky.
The politician recalled that according to the 2001 census, more than 8 million Russians lived in Ukraine, and according to various expert estimates, more than half of the country’s population communicate in Russian.
According to him, the Law “On Education” not only introduces a split in the society and discriminates against Ukrainians, but also reduces the quality and volume of education, places the vocational education on the brink of survival, and also encourages teachers to resign.
“The OPPOSITION BLOC faction voted in the Verkhovna Rada against the Law “On Education”. It violates the Constitution and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. According to the Basic Law, the state guarantees to national minorities the right to study in their native language, and the Law “On Education” deprives Ukrainians of this right,” the parliamentarian added.
According to Novinsky, OPPOSITION BLOC will do everything to ensure that the Law “On Education” to be abolished.
“We appealed to the Constitutional Court in order for the law to receive an appropriate assessment. We began collecting signatures throughout the country, and in a short time, more than 100,000 signatures were collected,” the MP noted.
In addition, Vadim Novinsky said that the OPPOSITION BLOC faction is preparing an alternative draft law “On Education”, which will be submitted to the parliament in the near future.
“We are preparing an alternative law, which will soon be submitted to the parliament. We work with all international partners to clarify our position and explain the essence of this law,” the opposition leader emphasized.
The politician also expressed the hope that tomorrow, October 12, at a meeting of the PACE, a Resolution on the Law “On Education” would be adopted. “Yesterday, at a meeting of the Committee for Culture of the PACE, a draft resolution was adopted, in which the Law “On Education” is called discriminatory and creates obstacles for national minorities to study in their native language. Tomorrow the project will be considered in the session hall, and I hope that MPs will vote for this Resolution. Maybe this will at least bring to reason our Ukrainian authorities,” Vadim Novinsky stressed.
