Statement of the OPPOSITION BLOC
The OPPOSITION BLOC continues to insist on the observance of the democratic quota principle for the formation of the Central Election Commission (CEC). We believe that the current composition of the CEC does not meet the expectations of Ukrainian society and does not correspond to the political configuration that has taken shape in the parliament, the norms of the Regulations and the traditions of Ukrainian democracy.
The parliamentary majority, guided by political expediency, bypassing the law and in violation of the Regulations increased the personal composition of the CEC. These decisions were made with complete disregard for the rights and fair demands of the OPPOSITION BLOC, the third largest parliamentary faction and the only real opposition force in Ukrainian politics, which recommended its two representatives. These authorities ignored the recommendations of the Venice Commission and the PACE, which state the need to represent the factions on the election commission proportionally.
We believe that in the current composition such an election commission will serve only the interests of the authorities. Such a composition of the CEC will not be able to ensure the holding of open, competitive, fair and democratic elections.
We will seek the inclusion of our candidates in the election commission. This is a legitimate demand of the Ukrainian opposition and Ukrainian society.
The OPPOSITION BLOC appeals to the representatives of the international democratic community, our international partners to support the efforts of the opposition in the struggle for democracy in Ukraine. A firm and unequivocal reaction to the violation of basic democratic principles today is extremely important for Ukrainian citizens, for all who want to see Ukraine as a truly democratic state, in which the rights and freedoms of a person and citizen are respected.
