Statement of the OPPOSITION BLOC
April 13, 2014 Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov signed a decree on conducting an anti-terrorist operation in the East of Ukraine. After that, the authorities changed their intentions many times about the end of the ATO operations, but not a single real step to bring peace closer has been done. Despite the promises of the authorities to establish peace in a matter of days, despite the agreements reached in Minsk and the peaceful plans developed through the mediation of European countries, the war continues in Donbas. The formats and names of military operations are changing, but people have been dying and suffering for the fourth year in a row, the economic and social crisis is deepening.
The United Nations called the war in Donbas one of the bloodiest conflicts in Europe since the end of the Second World War. Over this period, more than 10 thousand people died. Over the past year, 105 civilians were killed, 486 were injured.
Ukrainian soldiers are being killed – husbands, sons and fathers, who could work and take care of their families. Only according to the official data of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine more than 2,500 people were killed, more than 9.5 thousand Ukrainian soldiers were injured in the military conflict. Non-battle losses due to negligence, internal strife and careless handling of weapons amounted to more than 1 thousand people.
Over 1.5 million people left their homes and became internally displaced. These citizens of Ukraine were forced to flee the war and start life in a new place almost from scratch. Most of them are experiencing serious difficulties with adaptation in the new territory, with the search for work, with rental housing and a prejudiced attitude towards themselves by new neighbors. The state’s duty is to support them at this difficult time.
The war destroys the future of our children, destroys the economy of Ukraine. The state’s losses from the conflict in the East, according to different estimates, amounted to 13-20% of Ukraine’s GDP, or more than $ 100 billion. And this is without taking into account losses from lost markets. State enterprises and infrastructure are destroyed, many mines are abandoned, cities and villages are in ruins, people live in basements.
The OPPOSITION BLOC advocates an urgent political settlement of the conflict. For the sake of peace in Ukraine, political decisions stipulated in the Minsk Agreements must be adopted, first of all, regarding the introduction of UN peacekeepers for the cessation of hostilities.
Today, it is already obvious to everyone that the current authorities will not make a single step to end the war. While the war is going on, they earn money: on military orders, on corruption and smuggling schemes. Peace will return to our country only when the power is changed. The OPPOSITION BLOC considers the settlement of the conflict to be its primary political task. We see our civil mission in this. We are convinced only when the war is over, the country has a chance to develop, and people have a better life.
