Co-Chairman of the OPPOSITION BLOC faction Oleksandr Vilkul held meetings with European politicians in Strasbourg, in the European Parliament, where the issues of the growth of radicalism in Ukraine and the persecution of the opposition were discussed.
MEPs-representatives of different factions and countries, including Great Britain, France, Denmark took an active part in meetings with the oppositionist. Among the issues discussed were the systemic pressure of the Ukrainian authorities on Oleksandr Vilkul, including the falsification of criminal cases against him and the introduction of proposals by the Prosecutor General's Office to the Verkhovna Rada for the removal of parliamentary immunity. It was noted that the activation of the pressure of the authorities is due to the fact that on May 9, Oleksandr Vilkul held a series of solemn events dedicated to the victory over Nazism in the Great Patriotic War, as well as after a number of opposition speeches against the growth in Ukraine of ultra-right radicalism supported by the authorities.
"I was on May 9, 2018 in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where together with Oleksandr Vilkul was at the celebration of the Victory Day. Victory in the war on Nazism is a holiday for the whole of Europe. I saw with my own eyes how the people of Ukraine supported Oleksandr Vilkul and the values of the world for which he stands. And the attack of the authorities against him is an attack against these people who supported him, who share his views and trust him to express them in the parliament of Ukraine," Jonathan Gill, one of the participants of the meeting, a member of the European Parliament from the UK from the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group said.
Among the participants of the meetings were also:
William Legge, Earl of Dartmouth, Member of the European Parliament of Great Britain, member of the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group, former member of the House of Lords;
Nicolas Bay, a member of the European Parliament from France, Europe of Nations and Freedom Group;
Morten Messerschmidt, Member of the European Parliament from Denmark, European Conservatives and Reformists Group;
David Coburn, a member of the European Parliament from the United Kingdom, Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group;
Jonathan Bullock, a member of the European Parliament from the United Kingdom, Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group;
Janice Atkinson, a member of the European Parliament from the United Kingdom, a group of Europe of Nations and Freedom Group;
Jonathan Arnott, a member of the European Parliament from the United Kingdom, Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group;
Marian Apostol, member of the General Secretariat of the European People's Party.
Oleksander Vilkul agreed with the deputies of the European Parliament to hold the next series of meetings in Kyiv, Brussels and Strasbourg to continue the dialogue and develop a strategy to increase the effectiveness of relations between Ukraine and the EU, as well as to prevent the growth of ultra-right radicalism in Ukraine and pressure on the opposition.
