The MP from the OPPOSITION BLOC Natalia Korolevska stated this, commenting on the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to increase the price of gas for the population from 23 November this year.
“The government’s decision to raise the gas price for the population to 8,550 UAH per thousand cubic meters is nothing more than outright robbery of the poorest and most unprotected citizens. And it was made in favor of the IMF in exchange for the next tranche, which this government already gathered years ahead, driving the country into a debt trap. Such a mediocre and unprofessional government policy will very painfully hit the citizens of Ukraine and put them on the verge of survival,” the opposition deputy prime minister emphasized.
She recalled that the debt for utilities has already exceeded 41 billion hryvnia and over the past four years has grown more than three times. People are simply unable to pay bills, because since 2014, tariffs for energy resources and housing and communal services have increased by 7-11 times. At the same time, according to the results of sociological research, a quarter of households in Ukraine already today cannot pay for the consumed utility services.
“It is a crime to raise the price of gas by 23.5%, while the draft budget only by the end of next year provides for an increase in the minimum pension by 9.4% and a minimum salary by 10.7%. If we add to this the tightening of rules for obtaining subsidies and a substantial reduction in their financing, most families will have to make a choice – to buy food or pay bills. After all, only according to preliminary calculations, the amount of payment for people living in standard two-room apartments will increase by at least a thousand hryvnias and will be at least 3.5 thousand hryvnias per month. Millions of families in Ukraine will be dropped over the edge of poverty. To prevent this, we registered the draft Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada No. 9230 with the requirement to cancel the decision to raise the price of gas, adopted at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on October 19. People should pay bills at adequate and financially reasonable tariffs, and the power that brazenly robs people should resign,” Natalia Korolevska summarized.
