The MP from the OPPOSITION BLOC Mykhailo Papiev stated this, commenting on the growth of inflation in Ukraine.
Inflation in Ukraine in 2017 (December 2017 to December 2016) accelerated to 13.7% compared to inflation of 12.4% in 2016, according to the State Statistics Service.
According to Mykhailo Papiev, in Ukraine for the fourth year in a row the high double-digit inflation remains. "As a result, both the level and growth rates of people's real incomes remain low, the purchasing power of citizens falls. Prices even bite the most necessary food," he said.
"Foodstuffs increased in price by an average of 16%. First of all, we are talking about social products with a low price. Products of higher quality have risen at an even higher rate. The prices for maintenance of houses and adjacent territories increased by 47.5%, fruits - by 34.5%, meat - by 29.4%, vegetables - by 24.7%, milk - by 23.1%. So, the New Year's table cost Ukrainians 42% more expensive than last year's", the MP stressed.
"According to international norms, poverty occurs when a person has a sum of less than 150 USD a month. The norm, according to the UN methodology, is 5 USD per day. In Ukraine, the subsistence minimum was 1.63 USD a day in 2017, which is more than three times less than the norm. Since January 1, 2018, a living wage has been established at the level of 1700 UAH. If at the rate of 28 UAH per dollar, we get a little more than 60 USD. So, over 80% of Ukrainians are below the poverty line," Mykhailo Papiev said.
At the same time, the opposition politician recalled that the Verkhovna Rada adopted by the State Budget-2018 and approved by the President does not provide for additional funds to increase social standards.
"OPPOSITION BLOC advocates fair, taking into account inflation, and not indicative indexation of wages and pensions. People have the right to a decent life," Mykhailo Papiev said.
