FACTS OF POLITICAL PERSECUTION AND VIOLATIONS AGAINST THE OPPOSITION IN UKRAINE
January 2014 – Current situation
In Ukraine there are systematic violations of human rights and citizens. The right to life, to work, to social and pensions, to freedom of speech was threatened.
Opposition in Ukraine is deprived of the right to carry out parliamentary and political activities.
There is a frank harassment of dissent. Citizens and representatives of the media, who allow themselves criticism of the current Ukrainian authorities, are threatened and repressed.
According to the data available in the OPPOSITION BLOC, in Ukraine, from January 2014 to October 2016, about 50,000 people suffered from political persecution and repression.
Direct pressure from the authorities (baseless calls to the Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Security Service, interrogations, searches, forced dismissal from jobs, politically motivated checks of fiscal bodies, administrative pressure, obstruction of agitation and political activity on the ground) were felt by over 30 thousand people .
Attacks and threats of radical groups controlled by the authorities have become one of the tools for suppressing dissent in Ukraine. More than 8,500 people were subjected to such attacks, intimidation and humiliation of radicals.
Employees of independent mass media receive threats. Journalists who allow themselves to criticize power are intimidated and killed.
About 100 people were affected by criminal prosecutions for political reasons and far-fetched charges, some of them have been or are in prison. At the same time, we are talking only about resonant matters that have become public.
Political persecution of dissidents led to the death of 59 people who were either killed or brought to suicide.
At the same time, it must be taken into account that the data given are far from complete, since under the incessant pressure of the authorities and the radical groups under its control, many victims are afraid of giving publicity to the facts of political persecution, intimidation and humiliation.
The OPPOSITION BLOC faction appealed to U.S Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on violations of the rights of citizens and the opposition.
The current situation regarding the protection of human rights indicates that Ukraine temporarily cannot be considered a safe country. A full-scale assault on freedom of speech continues – journalists are imprisoned, kidnapped, and beaten, some journalists were killed. Electoral justice and the manual management of law enforcement agencies and courts are flourishing, pressure on the courts and judges has become an everyday event. The authorities encourage the use of physical pressure on people who disagree with the regime, as well as on judges and journalists. The creation of paramilitary groups, which illegally assume the powers of the investigation and the court, block the work of the media, are welcomed. These cases are not only improperly investigated, but also receive almost unconcealed approval of the authorities.
